RENOVATION, HISTORIC PRESERVATION, DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION, ADAPTIVE REUSE
LOCATION: AVOCA, IA SIZE: MULTIPLE BUILDINGS Avoca Main StreetThe project consisted of serving as a consulting and design agent on behalf of the City of Avoca, Iowa, developing an inventory of the city's downtown buildings. Physical inventory was taken of each building along a two-block stretch and an historical and contextual design was provided for each. Working withing the Iowa Main Streets guidelines, the purpose was to improve the aesthetic and actual condition of the the downtown in order to encourage pedestrians and commerce.
Generally, improvements consisted of window replacements, reconstruction of historically correct frames and trims, the addition of awnings, exterior lighting, and general building improvements. The Hotel (in name only) was resurrected from a derelict flophouse to a multi-unit apartment building. The 7 living units were offered at market and low-income rate housing. The three upper level unis have a Juliet Balcony. The turret features sitting areas. The ground level offers an ADA compliant living unit and commercial space. |
