HISTORIC RENOVATION, ADAPTIVE REUSE, COMMERCIAL, ADA
LOCATION: COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA SIZE: 12,000 SF Nonpareil Building Restoration and AdditionThe Nonpareil Building in Council Bluffs was being considered for historical status by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. As such, as a Phase 1 Site inventory Form for the Iowa State Historical Preservation Society was submitted. The form described the 1926 neoclassical revival style building. Included in the form was a history of the Nonpareil Newspaper's occupation of the building from 1926 to 2002 and a condition assessment of the building envelope.
In 1963, the structure was covered by precast concrete panels. The project removed the concrete panels exposing the building's heavily damaged west elevation. As feasible, the owner's intention was to restore the building to its original appearance. Additionally, the improvements included modifying the site to accommodate a drive thru bank lane for the prime tenant. A modern lobby was added to the exterior of the original building to provide ADA compliance and access to all levels. |
